Intelligent power integration through new interfaces between software and hardware
At the London EV Show, which opened yesterday, we managed to secure an exclusive interview with Kijoo Jeong, Head of Product Planning and New Business at Humax. Jeong offered a detailed look into the company’s upcoming second-generation home charger, which is set to launch here in the UK in May 2025.
“This is our second-generation home charger, which we are aiming to launch early next year,” explained Jeong. “It has a future-ready platform inside, including a communication module with the EV, enabling next-generation services and features.”
Smart Charging Reimagined
The standout feature of the new charger is its advanced smart charging capability. Humax has developed a system that moves beyond traditional scheduling to create an optimised, automated process tailored to the user.
“This is not just simple scheduling,” Jeong emphasised. “It is based on much more information, such as the state of charging we get from the EV, the user’s energy data, and their preferences. We can generate the most optimal charging schedule automatically without needing manual input.”
Jeong highlighted the potential for integration with intelligent power plans like those offered by companies such as Octopus and Eon. The system also supports home energy management by monitoring solar panel output, battery energy storage systems (ESS), and the EV’s charging state. “Humax can integrate all of this information to generate the most optimised and cost-effective charging schedule for the user,” he added.
Comprehensive Solutions for the UK Market
Humax is targeting a competitive price point for its new charger, with an emphasis on broadening its network of UK installation and support services.
“We are actively recruiting a broader network,” said Jeong. “We have some partnerships in place, but we’re ambitious and will need a full range of installation and support options across the UK.” Humax also announced a distribution partnership with Kelvelec at the London EV Show.
The company’s unique strength lies in its ability to combine hardware and software expertise. “For us, this is a truly unique selling point,” said Jeong. “We design and produce the hardware as well as the complete software solution—for both B2B and consumer solutions—which makes us unique in the market.”
From Set-Top Boxes to EV Chargers
Jeong likened the trajectory of the EV charging market to the early development of set-top boxes, a sector in which Humax established itself as a leader. “The future EV charger won’t just be a hardware product,” he explained. “It will be your ‘Jarvis,’ with intelligent software on top of a solid hardware platform. This is a market in which our experience is unmatched.”
